APR got their 2009 Fiba-Africa Club Championship campaign off to a flying start after a cracking second-half display handed them a comprehensive 91-59 victory over Mazembe at the newly refurbished Amahoro Indoor Stadium.

Cedric Isom scored 21 points, ending the second and third quarters with last-second baskets. Andrew Francis and crowd favourite Robert Thomson added 14 points each to leave the Congolese, who had leveled matters at half-time (30-30) short of ideas.

“At half-time, we realized that we had to be sharper offensively and we did just that. Over-all, we had a good game and hope we keep it up tomorrow (today) when we play a more physical Kano Pillars’ side,” APR’s Kenyan coach Cliff Owuor said in a brief post-match interview.

Group A’s other tie between ASA and Petro Atletico was postponed following the former’s late arrival.

In Group B, Cooperative Bank squeezed out a 71-70 win over Warriors of Uganda while defending champions Primeiro de Agosto was dominating play when we went to press.

The Angolans were in a commanding position at half-time following their 39-point half-time lead over Congo Brazzaville’s Inter-Club.
