Serrekunda West Sports Organization is gearing up to stage basketball championships just weeks after completing its summer activities, Alhagie Amat Cham Public Relations Officer of the organization, has disclosed.
According to Amat, six teams have already registered with them to stage the championships.
Amat said they are engaging in this because they have completed their first priority. “Our priority was to organize a successful Nawettan and also organize third division qualifiers which we did successfully,
“Our Nawettan is over and just last week we finished with our third division qualifiers so now we have to organize other sports and the first we have in mind is basketball. We have planned for it for a long time now but thankfully we now have six teams. Registration is open till December 31, 2009.
After this day we will close down registration because a date has been set for the commencement of the championship so interested teams can still come and register with us for the championship,” he said.
Alhagie Amat Cham, said their main reason for organizing such a championship is to bring back the golden days of basketball. Amat said his committee had realized recently basketball that is why they are trying to revive the sport.
“In those days Amat recalls, basketball used to be a big sport in the country but today rarely do you hear of a basketball championship but with this we believe we can re-ignite the love for the sport. We want to see the days where from watching a league game, you can go straight to the basketball court to watch a basketball game like it use to be in the 80s.”
Amat confirms that notables such as Wallidan, Serrekunda East, YMCA and Ebo Town will be participating in the league championship.
He said because registration is open till December 31; participating teams might exceed six. He also stated that after basket ball they might organize another sport.
