UAE gained the first win at the World University Games. They survived extra period to handle South Africa in the classification games for the 23rd-25th spot. UAE will next face China.
The Arab team looked better at the start of the game. They fired 21 points in the opening frame to pile up a 6-point lead after ten minutes. But South Africa capitalized on numerous turnovers from their opponents to take over in the second stanza. They limited UAE to 11 points in the quarter and trimmed the distance to just 2 points at halftime. The third frame turned into a one-way traffic as South Africa scored eagerly keeping UAE silent. South Africa jumped in front and finished the stanza ahead by 15 points. But the Asian powerhouse was not done just yet. They answered with an impressive comeback rally to clip the distance and forced overtime. The teams kept it close in the extra frame but UAE proved just more accurate at the end securing a tough win. Salah Khalifa (183-90) produced 25 points, 6 boards and 4 assists for the winners. Salah Khalifa Khalil Ibrahim (180-G-91) added 16 points, 6 boards and 4 assists for UAE. Thami Kukulela (194-G-85) responded with 21 points and 13 boards for South Africa. Celemusa Khumalo (193-G-88) had 18 points in the loss.
