Visiting Africa Zone Five and East and Central Africa clubs basketball champions Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) walloped Kenya College of Accountancy University (KCA-U) 59-23.
KPA returned back with a bang after a three-week absence to discipline the hosts in a women’s Premier League match at Nyayo National Stadium Gymnasium on Saturday.
KPA, who had dipped to seventh position in the league table standings, had to soar over KCA-U to be among the top five.
The champions started strongly by bagging the first quarter 20-8. They slowed down the pace in the second quarter, but again KCA-U did nothing to up their game, which gave KPA an edge to win 14-3 to put the scores 34-11 at break time.
Following their two weeks training for the regional clubs championships in Kampala on July 28, one would have expected a strong show by the visitors.
"We slowed down the pace in the second half to avoid injuries after realising we were better off, it was a tactic," said KPA head coach, Anthony Ojukwu.
KPA, who have been in the league since 1987, won the unimpressive second half quarters 12-7 and 13-5.
"It was a learning experience for my girls since I knew KPA were veterans and experienced," Charles Goro who, coaches KCA-U, said of the match.
Evelyn Akoth, Joyce Makumu and Yvonne Akinyi gave KPA nine, eight and six points while the game’s top scorer was Evelyn Adhiambo netted 10 points for KCA-U.
KPA meet Mennonites, while their men’s team face league leaders and reigning champions KCB Lions today.
Basement area club Parklands Baptist on Saturday upped their game to overcome men’s Division One League leaders Blazers at Nyayo.
Baptist won the tight encounter 54-53, which is an assurance of resting at the top five.
