UGANDA : Sparks invade powerhouse Rangers’ route to playoffs

By Charles Mutebi

THE Makerere Sparks are on the verge of denying MTN-FUBA ladies league powerhouses the KIU Rangers a place in this year’s playoffs. And that can only mean one thing – the Sparks are becoming a force all over again.

The 2003 champions recorded a 79-71 victory over the Makerere Cubs on Sunday to move a step closer to breaking into what has been an exclusive club for the past two years.

The playoffs club has been monopolised by A1 Challenge, Rangers, UCU Canons and KCC Leopards since 2007.

A1, UCU and KCC have already booked their tickets but now the Sparks are threatening to knock out the Rangers, which could happen this Friday when the two sides meet at YMCA courts.

Sounding the war drums, Sparks captain Ahsa Komugisha said, “It’s time we stepped up. We are going to beat the Rangers.”

She explained: “It’s a decider and everyone in the team is psyched (for the Rangers game).”

Obviously there will be no shortage of motivation among the Rangers, who are staring at failure to make the postseason for the first time in three years.

With three games to the end of the season, the two teams are tied with 28 points but the Sparks occupy fourth place courtesy of a better points average.
