GHANA : FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE?

This year has produced alot of basketball activities and news in Ghana Basketball. The biggest news of them all was the formalization and change in management and governance of the Ghana Basketball Association (GBBA) in June 2009 by the National Sports Council (NSC). As defined by the BBC English Dictionary 'When something changes or when you change it, it becomes different' but in the case of change in the GBBA one cannot clearly say there is a difference. It's been three months since the formalization of the managment of the GBBA and no one in the Ghanaian basketball industry feels the effect not even players, coaches or officials let alone fans and supporters of Ghana basketball.

Is this change for better or for worse? Ghana basketball has over the past and present years existed without a common vision and this has resulted in the isolation of all its stakeholders. So much basketball seems to be happening in Ghana but none is been streamlined by the GBBA. The GBBA is still yet to present a developmental programme on how it seeks to develop and promote basketball in Ghana in the areas of players, coaches, officials, sponsorship & fans yet still one sees and hears the GBBA Logo and GBBA name mentioned as supporters during basketball events and games organized by other groups. With so many basketball events and programmes happening this year, from basketball tournaments to basketball camps none has been organized by the GBBA. The GBBA cannot even smile about a national team programme since August 2008 amidst the many continental youth and senior African basketball competitions which has happened in 2009 alone. This is clear that Ghana will not be participating in basketball during the qualification for the 2010 Junior Olympics to be held in Singapore. What could be the problems and challenges facing the GBBA? I hope to bring them to light as I seek for a one on one interview with members of the management of the GBBA.
