KENYA : Champs KCB Lions and KPA tops in open title race in years intensifies

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) are firmly on course for their first national title since 1991 following their win at home huge over the weekend.

The porters who walloped regional champions Co-operative Bank of Kenya 86-65 in Mombasa shot, to the second place behind the reigning champions KCB Lions. KCB also beat University of Nairobi "Terrorists" 72-53 in Nairobi. KPA won the inaugural league in 1987.

Lions and KPA leap frogged early pace setters International Christian Center (ICC) who did not have a game. KCB and KPA are all on 24 points but the bankers have played 14 games compared to KPA's 13. With all their remaining matches to be played at home, KPA are tipped to take pole position for the play offs.

Co-op Bank, the first team to win four titles in a row from 1995 - 1998 but have not bagged cince since, are in real danger of finishing lower than fifth. Care Oketch's boys, who have two matches left to play have ammased a total of 21 points.

Suprise package ICC, have now moved dow to third place with 23 points. They too have two games left to play while Strathmore University have similar number of points. They have finished their fixtures.

Posta are fifth with 22 points with two games left tom play one of which will be at the makande Welkfare Hall, USIU, sadly brought down to earth 77-75 by Lomboritz are seventh with 19 points same as Lomboritz who have a game left.

UoN, the only team that will miss the expanded eight team play offs, have 15 points having posted only one win whole season. Having lost key players mid stream, the campus lads must now re-group fornext season.

In the women's category reigning champions KPA who are going for their third title in a row remains favourites for the top spot. KPA is the only team to have won three crowns in a row more than twice. They have 23 points from 12 games.

The are tied with leaders Eastern Queens who have played one game more. Eagle Wings are third on 22 points while KCA University are fourth with te same number of points.

Sprite Storms morale boosting 50-49 win over USIU, have moved to fifth with 18 points. Yana have 17 while Flames have gannered 16. Strathmore who alkso pipped KCA 49-48 have 14 and occupy last play off spot. Mennonites are last with 12.
