Kampala City Council (KCC) Lions could survive relegation and Uganda Christian University (UCU) Mukono Canons suffer the drop instead. Only a week ago, former two-time MTN-Fuba League semi-finalists Canons seemed to have staved off relegation but the situation has changed, suddenly.

The Mukono-based side turned up late for their rescheduled game against KCC Lions on Tuesday, losing four points by forfeiture. According to the local governing body, Fuba, an official communication was sent to both teams last week indicating that the game would start at 6pm.

“A reminder was sent to the teams few hours before the game but I understand UCU talked to one of the technical committee members and were informed of a different tip-off time,” Fuba assistant general secretary Joseph Manano told Daily Monitor yesterday.

UCU Canons, one of the most feared league teams in the past two years, came to YMCA Wandegeya knowing that the game was to start at 8:30pm only to reach there after KCC Lions had been awarded points. If the decision stands, UCU Canons (18 points) will be relegated to Second Division alongside Knight Riders, even if they win their season-ending fixture against KIU tomorrow.

KCC Lions (22) will survive for the second consecutive season even if they lose to Falcons in their final game this weekend. However, there is hope that the game can be replayed. “We realise there was a small communication lapse and the technical committee is sitting to discuss the issue. The game is very important for both teams and we are trying to be as fair as possible,” Manano noted.
