Kampala International University (KIU) are certain of making a maiden MTN-Fuba League semi-final play-offs appearance as long as they honour today’s regular season ending fixture against Ndejje University Angels.
After a run of seven wins, Nimrod Kaboha’s charges need one point from today’s game to dethrone Nkumba Marines from fourth position and book a semi-final date with reigning champions DMark Power on Friday.
KIU’s fairytale this season is as intriguing as is puzzling for other opponents. After only three wins in the first round, KIU looked like they were destined for relegation but shockingly turned tables. Besides being the only team to defeat Power this season, KIU upset Falcons and title hopefuls Warriors and could wrap up the second round unbeaten with victory today.
Nkumba Marines, Miracle and Ndejje all had hopes of piping KIU to the fourth and last play-offs slot but couldn’t produce as much steely performances at the most critical stage. Miracles’ hopes were dashed by back-to-back defeats against Knight Riders and Marines.
Timothy Odeke’s Marines, now on 28 points, can only make the play-offs if KIU fail to turn up for today’s clash. Having finished second behind Power, Warriors will face record champions Falcons in the best-of-five semi-final play-offs starting with Game One on Saturday.
Meanwhile, yesterday’s rescheduled match tie between UCU Canons and KCC Lions couldn’t take place after the latter opted to skip the replay. KCC Lions are keen to take Fuba to court. Fuba, however, wants to settle the matter amicably.
