A buzzer-beater three-pointer at the end of the fifth additional period by Louchano Moumou gave Anse Etoile a hard-fought victory over Juniors last Tuesday at the Victoria Gymnasium.
The young Juniors team, under the leadership of coach Gregoire Scholastique, took advantage of their opponents’ inconsistency in offence to take an early 21-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.
It was during the second period that the Anse Etoile players adjusted their game and came up with a more solid defence, which helped them to close the score gap.
They managed to score 19 points compared to only seven for Juniors, who led by only two points at half-time.
The third period was keenly contested with both teams struggling to keep the lead. By the end, Anse Etoile were leading 21-17.
Already in foul trouble, Anse Etoile found it difficult to stop the boys of coach Scholastique penetrating their defence to score some crucial points at the end of the last quarter to tie the match at 69 points apiece at the final whistle.
After three extra periods, the final score was locked at 103 and two more extra times were needed before Anse Etoile could take home the win on a 115-112 score.
Moumou and Faizel Naiken scored 31 points apiece for Anse Etoile, while with 36 points – including 7 treys – Ron Estico was Juniors’ top scorer.
In another match played during the week, Kenneth Moustache scored 16 points to take English River-based RA Herons past LMS Youth.
After comfortable leads – 15-19 and 15-7 – in the first and second quarters, the Herons lost their grip and the third period, 20-11.
Withstanding strong resistance from their opponents, they managed to bounce back and win the fourth quarter 15-9 to take the match 56-45.
Alain Estro had the hot hands for LMS Youth with 16 points.
Following the victories, Anse Etoile and RA Herons are both on 24 points, with the latter one place ahead due to a superior basket difference.
