Elvis Onyango scored 44 points, the highest by any player in the ongoing Sprite schools tournament as hosts Manjasi recovered from their opening day defeat to hammer Jinja SS 67-44 yesterday. Onyango’s performance, though, couldn’t mask the rate at which the school – a hitherto a basketball powerhouse– has lost its bite. The mention of Manjasi in the late 90s would send chills down the spines of opposing teams but the hosts can’t even dream of winning such a tournament with the class being exhibited by Old Kampala and title holders Ssaku.
Old Kampala made the quarterfinals without a loss in three outings, completing their sweep with a come-from-behind 78-48 victory over Kalinabiri SS. Nakawa Division’s Kalinabiri took a 20-16 first quarter lead but made countless errors in the second.
