UGANDA : Former MVP Omony returns with a bang
By Charles Mutebi
STEVEN Omony is back. The KCC Lions, however, might be wondering whether he ever left.
The 30 year-old made his first appearance of the season and for Miracle Eagles but the Lions will testify that Omony is the same old ruthless force.
Omony bagged a game-high 25 points and 11 rebounds as the Eagles embarrassed KCC, giving them their worst loss in the national basketball men’s top-flight season.
Miracle won 83-38 in front of an empty arena but news of ‘Omo’s’ return will undoubtedly spread throughout the league.
The Eagles will be hoping the former Falcons star can rescue another season in danger of ending in disappointment and lead them to an unprecedented play-off berth.
For that, Omony will have to go beyond playing well to making his team-mates including Brian Ssentongo, Kizito Ceasar, Mohammed Ali and Albert Aciku play well.
Besides Chris Kyebambe, Aciku, who gunned 13 points against the Lions, is the only player on the Miracle team in Omony’s generation.
The rest are younger players and Omony will have to show patience if he is be “the leader” Miracle bought him to be.
The Lions could do with some leadership.
Against Miracle, they put in a display so poor even their opponents cannot take all the credit for it.
Peter Senfuka’s 10 points saved KCC from the embarrassment of finishing a league game without a player in double digits.
Elsewhere, Geoff Omondi led the UCU Canons to 72-63 win over Ndejje Angels with a game-high 18 points.
Paul Mwaka also netted 18 for Ndejje but didn’t have enough support to alter the destiny of the game.
