ZIMBABWE : Warumwa Warumwa: Easter Tourney...!

Cavaliers asserted their dominance over bitter rivals Cameo-Sigauke in the final of the Easter Tournament dubbed "Warumwa Warumwa" winning 59-58 in a nail biting finish that went to the wire. Trailing 58-57 with 11 seconds to go and Cameo-Sigauke inbounding the ball, it all looked over for Cavaliers as Came0-Sigauke needed to keep possession. Cameo-Sigauke's Agrippa Masvisvi went to inbound the ball and after some tenacious denial defence from Cavaliers, Masvisvi threw the ball to a seemingly open Taurayi Chitsinde but Cavaliers' Tafirenyika "The Magician" Soko had anticipated the inbounds and came from nowhere to steal the ball midair, passed it to tournament MVP Cavaliers Lance Manomano who penetrated to the elbow and hit a short jumper with time expiring whilst the ball was in flight. After that it was time for the celebrations as the cry of "Cavs! Cavs! Cavs!" rang at the University of Zimbabwe .

In a game that started at a blistering pace Cavaliers made known their intent hitting 6 3-pointers in the 1st quarter to finish 26-15 up. Last weekend in a league game Cavaliers had done exactly the same thing to Cameo-Sigauke where they led 38-11 at halftime and finished Cameo-Sigauke off 57-34. The 2nd quarter was a completely different story as Cameo-Sigauke came back with a tenacity Cavaliers could not handle winning that quarter 18-5 and going into halftime leading 33-31 over Cavaliers.3rd quarter was evens-stevens as Cavaliers took that one 15-13 to tie the score at 46-46. Then came the pivotal quarter where the defences played like men possessed till the crucial steal by Soko.

Cavaliers came into the tourney outright favourites and skipped through the opposition as expected beating Chitungwiza Lions 126-43 and Drifters 82-52. In the semi-final Cavaliers beat UZ Starz 72-41 to earn a championship berth. In the other group Cameo-Sigauke were just as rampant overcoming Sharks 115-21 and UZ Starz 40-28 in a bad tempered game characterised by poor officiating.

In the women's section Cameo-Siwela were not challenged as they beat a plucky Lakers team (53-32) but the darling of the tournament had to be Lakers pint-sized Pauline Amon who stands not more than 3 feet tall but whose dribbling skills were a joy to watch all weekend. Her combination with Edith Munodaani was lethal as they ran the much bigger teams ragged. The Lakers run to the finals was a Cinderella story that had a poor ending as Lakers beat highly fancied UZ Starz women 43-38 after having lost to Cameo-Siwela 31-45 and then beating Hellas 63-22 to finish 2nd in the section and earn a berth in the finals. Lakers coach Owen Kasengezi had a big smile on his face on qualifying for the final and predicted they would be many more finals appearances.

Cameo-Siwela were too strong beating everyone in the group stage Lakers (45-31), Hellas (60-43) but had to hang on (48-47) against a UZ Starz team that needed to win that game to qualify for the finals. With Finals MVP Jackie Mutuvha combining with Anesu Kanonhuwa, Patience "Jamfimfi" Pasipanodya and Tino Mushapaidze the Cameo-Siwela team was too big and too good for the opposition. Ex-UZ Starz point guard now turning out for Cameo-Siwela Tererai Chikukwa ran rings of the opposition and was the x-factor in the game against UZ Starz.

The tournament was played over 3 days starting on Friday at the University of Zimbabwe then on Saturday moved to Hellenics in Eastlea before moving back to the University for the semi-finals and finals on Sunday April 4, 2010.
