FOR the UCU Canons, today’s encounter with D’Mark Power will be more than a chance to get their season off to winning start. It will be an opportunity to gauge their prospects for the 2010 MTN-FUBA men’s top-flight season.

The Canons have high ambitions for this campaign having strengthened their squad with three key acquisitions, one of them on a return. Geoffrey Omondi was a key figure in UCU’s team between 2007 and 2008 before opting to return home to Kenya last year.

Now he is back to help fire-up a squad hoping to make the playoffs. Omondi is a feisty character but his attitude is the kind needed in a competitive environment.

Omondi aside, the Mukono-based team have signed Jimmy Enabu and Sunday Okot – two hugely talented guards who will add the much-needed depth to the Canons.
Along with the gifted trio of Ivan Enabu, Robert Mugabe and Steven Mwesigye, the new acquisitions can help UCU become a force. On the other hand, Power are leading contenders for the championship, boasting of a supremely endowed line-up.

They edged out defending champions Warriors in the season opener last week and will be fancied to defeat the Canons as well. The question is whether UCU can pull off an upset.
