Kyambogo Warriors could start their MTN-Fuba League title defence without Martin Okwako. The Kenyan star is likely to join Kampala International University (KIU) to pursue further studies.

“He (Okwako) has informed us that he intends to return to school and we can’t stop him,” Warriors coach Gad Eteu, who led the team to their first championship last year, said.
Okwako still has a year left on his contract with Warriors but Eteu thinks a compromise can be reached if the player insists on moving and is offered a scholarship at KIU.

“There is a possibility that we can swap Okwako with another quality player from KIU,” the coach explained.

Class act
Although Ronnie Kasewu scooped the MVP accolade, many agree that Okwako was a class act as Warriors dispatched DMark Power 4-1 in the best-of-seven play-off series at YMCA, Wandegeya.
Few would have actually complained if the utility guard had been voted play-offs MVP. If at all he leaves, Warriors may struggle to find a suitable replacement.

“Okwako is a good leader for us on and off the pitch. In case he goes, we have to look around for a good defensive player,” Eteu revealed.

Warriors have since the close of last season courted KIU centre forward Michael Karuiki and there is a likelihood he will be involved in the swap deal.

KIU coach Nimrod Kaboha has, however, ruled out the possibility of consenting to a deal of any kind involving the departure of Kariuki.

“Okwako would be a plus for our team but not at the expense of Kariuki,” said Kaboha. “For me, Kariuki is priceless. And besides, management hasn’t informed me of any deal for Okwako. I am also sure Warriors have the potential of paying Okwako’s fees at any local university.”

Eteu said the player’s situation would be sorted out next week when club patron Ambrose Tashobya returns from his trip abroad. Elsewhere, Albert Aciko has left Warriors for Miracle Eagles. “He asked to leave and we granted his wish,” Eteu said.

“We are in the process of restructuring and will release at least four of our fringe players before the season gets underway next month.”

Warriors have already signed Brian Ssentongo from the Rubaga-based Miracle Eagles.
