Hosts Kangaru School walloped Wachoro Boys A 49-3 to lift the basketball trophy at the Embu Open Inter-Schools Championships at the weekend.
Wachoro Boys B finished third in the category after overcoming Kamama Boys in the third/fourth place playoffs.
Muthambi High School lifted the girls’ basketball trophy after a fierce tussle with Kangaru Girls, who settled for position two.
Kamiu Secondary School from Embu, who earlier beat St. Paul’s Kevote 2-1, won the boys football title.
Wachoro beat Karaba of Eastern Province 4-3 in after penalty shoots to finish third in football.
Muthambi also emerged football queens after edging out Kiriari Girls as Kangaru beat Kianyaga Boys 2-1 to lift the hockey trophy. Mukuuni beat Muthambi 2-1 in the finals to win the girls’ hockey contest.
Handball boys’ title went to Kirimari after they stopped Siakago with 2-1 victory as Kangaru beat Kinyaga 4-3 to lift the girls’ handball trophy.
Khalid Omar from Kangaru School won the boys’ table tennis, while Vera Maore of Kiriari Girls won the girls’ category.
Kengoge Boys and Kiriari Girls were the boys and girls badminton champions. The event, which followed Lenana Open, saw more than150 teams from 50 schools across the country participate.
"The tournament was run on the theme of ‘Unity for prosperity’. This is a healing call that should make us live as one besides helping the schools to gear up for the national schools games," said event coordinator Kanyi Gioko. This weekend, all roads lead to Meru for the Meru Open championships to be hosted in Meru School, Meru Teachers Training College and Methodist University venues before proceeding to Kitui for Kitui Open next weekend.
Already 100 schools have confirmed participation.
