It may not be an ideal situation but Nkumba Marines find themselves in a desirable position as the MTN-Fuba League reached the mid-way point on Saturday.

A 79-44 walloping of St. Michael at YMCA court, Wandegeya, ensured that Marines lurk in sixth on 17 points, just two behind Kyambogo Warriors, who occupy the final play-off position. Point guard Julius Lutwama capped a tumultuous first round, punctuated by a broken finger, with a game-high 22 points.

On a day when Philip Wakimwero blew cold with only two points, Alex Muluya (20), Danson Ngati (12) and Ladislavis Ikungura (8) rose to the occasion for coach Timothy Odeke’s side.

“If you look at our injury situation, our target was to finish the first round in fifth or sixth to give ourselves a chance of fighting for a play-off spot,” Odeke noted.
