NO one could have predicted this would be a top-of-the-table clash at any point in the FUBA basketball men’s top-flight season, let alone the half-way stage, writes Charles Mutebi.

The UCU Canons had flirted with relegation last year while the Mountain Dew Falcons threatened to disintegrate before the campaign began after losing Steven Omony and brothers Henry and Eric Malinga. Every sign pointed to a hard season for both.

But the Canons signed Jimmy Enabu and resigned Geoffrey Omondi while the Falcons splashed out on 11 signings, eight from the neighbouring states, and the rest is history.

The Canons are unbeaten in 10 matches while the Falcons, who defeated the KCC Lions 75-43 on Wednesday, have won nine and lost one. Today’s victor will finish the first round top.

The two teams employ somewhat different styles, with the Falcons more reliant on a half-court game than the Canons, who thrive on a transition approach.

“The key for us will be to slow them down,” said Falcons coach Michael Mureithi. “They play a fast game and are very good in one-on-one situations. We will have to cut those situations out.”

In the women league, A1 Challenge complete their first round against Makerere Sparks. A1 have won 10 in all while Sparks have lost three.
