Mountain Dew Falcons showed immense grit and determination to edge giant killers Nkumba Marines 46-44 in a low-scoring and often dour MTN-Fuba League game at YMCA court, Wandegeya on Saturday night. Not much separated the two sides that have eight league titles between them except Richard Osano Omondi.
The Kenyan forward made six steals in addition to scoring 13 points, picking two rebounds and 12 assists as Falcons rode through the four quarters 11-9, 10-8, 13-11 and 12-16 respectively.
Falcons, champions on six occasions, are now certainties to finish third. This sets up a semi-final play-off clash with either DMark Power or UCU Canons. Coach Timothy Odeke’s screams in the dugout almost re-awakened Nkumba as Wilson Otweyo sunk 17 points but could only add two rebounds.
The usually explosive Philip Wakimwero (10) fell two rebounds short of another double-double as Ladislas Inkungura’s seven turnovers proved costly. This made the guard’s 12 points a meagre drop in the ocean. Coach Walker Obedi cut a more comfortable figure as his Ndejje University Angels steamrolled Berkley 110-56.
Coming three days after he was sent away from the dugout for a quarrel with umpire Baker Mande in their defeat to champions Kyambogo Warriors, Obedi’s team responded with their biggest winning margin ever.
It was a walk in the park as Geoffrey Soro scored 21 points and eight rebounds as Ndejje cruised 31-9, 27-12, 26-16 26-18 in the four periods. Cyrus Kiviri (18), Daniel Muya (15) and Larry Olum (13) left with something to show for the feast on the relegation-bound side. Berkley’s William Odong (14) and Abdul Ntale (11) hardly gave the scoreboard any respect.
