RWANDA’s hopes of sneaking into the last eight of the Afrobasket U-18 Kagame Cup hang in a balance after yesterday’s 69-70 defeat against Mozambique.
The junior hoops were slight favourites heading into the game but were stunned by a side who marched into the game still looking for their first win of the competition after losing their first four games.
The youngsters got off to a poor start losing the first two quarters 12-13 and 9-22 but a second half surge almost swayed the game back in their favour.
The team bridged the deficit with a 21-13 third quarter win and looked on course for a sweat win with three minutes to play.
However, like it has played out in the last three games, the youngsters still managed to let down their fans in the last 20 seconds.
Lionel Hakizimana tried to lift the team with a game high 29 points but it was all in vain as he was fouled out with 40 seconds to play.
Pascal Karekezi, who was at fault for making a careless pass in the last seconds, also weighed in with 15 points.
Earlier in the day, Ivory Coast fell to Gabon 46-80, Tunisia rolled over Angola 73-47 while Congo Brazzaville had to dig deep before seeing off Algeria 90- 87 at Green Hills Academy.
