Kyambogo Warriors were yesterday given a day-off by coach Mandy Juruni. It was more than just him being pleased that his team swept Nkumba Marines 83-62 in the MTN-Fuba League on Sunday night.
“I think they (players) are feeling so tired from the workouts we have had of late,” Juruni said after his team improved their season record to 6-1. Juruni might have passed as arrogant for good reason as Warriors are now tied with Miracle Eagles and champions DMark Power at the summit.
Like the recent games, it looked so easy for Warriors as Eric Malinga put up another salvo worth 14 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. Eric, whose brother Henry Malinga scored 10 points and nine boards, played like a continuation from the mid-week win over KIU Titans where he had 21.
Warriors cruised through the four quarters 20-16, 12-5, 26-25 and 25-16 respectively. They won’t train again until tomorrow whereas Marines want to get back to business now that their season is 3-4. Philip Wakimwero had arguably his best game thus far with 17 points and 11 boards adding to Danson Ngati’s brilliant but fruitless 17. Marines really lacked the depth to match Warriors who also had Ronnie Kasewu (15), Ivan Enabu 12) and Brian Gumisiriza (11) make notable contributions.
