Dar es Salaam. More than 50 pupils from various schools in Dar es Salaam converged at Tanganyika International School yesterday for the opening of a series of basketball clinics.
Conducted by the national team coach, Bahati Mgunda, the clinics are aimed at promoting the sport from the grassroots and giving the youngsters an opportunity to learn the basics of basketball.
“Participating pupils are aged between 14 and 18. Those who will excel during the two-week training would secure scholarship to Canada for further training at Memorial Newfound University,” Mgunda said.
He could not conceal his disappointment over the failure by young players from upcountry, who opted to skip the event in the eleventh hour. The coach said those who will travel to Canada would undergo a series of training sessions under Peter Benoite, one of the best basketball coaches in Canada.
