KENYA : Teams rush to pay up

Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) started receiving checks after FeverPitch highlighted on lack of payment of league fees by the participating teams.

KBF fixtures secretary, Joseph Amoko, said on Sunday teams were paying up their balances after reading their names in the paper.
"I received a call from Nairobi Pentecostal Church early this morning saying they their team had not paid the league fee. They promised to clear the dues tomorrow," Amoko said.

United States International University-Africa (Usiu-A) had already prepared their cheque by on Sunday morning following the highlight. However, Usiu-A men and women’s teams in the Premier League are yet to pay a cent.

KBF was also waiting for Strathmore University’s check for the women’s team that had already been prepared and was awaiting delivery. Strathmore, who asked for an apology from the federation concerning the payment, had already paid for the men’s team.

Mennonites said they would clear their bill by Wednesday. Africa Nazarene University (ANU) did not turn up at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday. ANU’s opponents, Kenya College of Accountancy University (KCA-U), collected two points and 20 goals after KBF awarded them a walkover.

League fee

Apart from the league fee, the federation wants ANU to submit their calendar so that their matches could be slotted in after their semester breaks. Kenya Ports Authority and Posta, who are members of Kecoso Games, are other teams that have calendars. "We are insisting teams pay the money because we are finding it difficult to pay for match venues and the referees," said Amoko.

Meanwhile, Mennonites beat Parklands Baptist 66-61 at Nyayo gymnasium on Sunday. Mennonites won 12-6 in the first quarter, but failed to carry the steam in the second quarter, which they lost 18-11.
Collins Ngira, who was impressive in the encounter, pushed Baptist after the break to edged Mennonites 18-17 in the third quarter.
Had it not been for the help of Collins Ochieng, who scored 22 points, Mennonites could not have won the last quarter 26-19.
