African Championships - Men Basketball : Summary of Day 5 in Libya (Qualifying Round)

Ivory Coast - Angola 61-88
The defending champion was too strong for Ivory Coast jumping to perfect 4-0 record n Qualifying Group E. There Nigeria also has 4-0 and these two teams will decide about the winner tomorrow. Ivory Coast is on 1-3 at the moment, but still with a chance to reach the Quarterfinals. Actually, if Ivory Coast beat Egypt tomorrow they will go to the next stage. Carlos Morais (190-G-85) once again led Angola scoring 18 points. Armando Costa (192-G-83) had 14 and Joaquim Gomes (200-C/F-80, agency: Prime Select Sports, college: Valparaiso) added one point less, plus 7 rebounds. The loosing squad did not have any player with double-digits in scoring. The best one was P. Kale (203-F-85, agency: Bradley Sports Management) with 9 points and 5 rebounds.

Libya - Egypt 75-73
The host of AfroBasket 2009 grabbed important win against Egypt keep its chancse for the Quarterfinals alive. Libya now has 1-3 and tomorrow will be decisive day for them. If they beat Mali and Ivory Coast suffers defeat against Egypt, Libya will go to the next stage. Egypt lost all chances for that. Alfath Belgasem (197-F/G-80, college: St.John's) was a key player for the winners collecting 23 points and 6 rebounds. Mohamed Mrsal (-78) had 15 and Hesham Salem (206-F/C-81, agency: Octagon, college: Fresno St.) netted two points less. In Team Egypt, Amro Sherif (192-G-91) had 18 points and 5 boards, Amir Fanan (189-G-80) contributed with 13 pts.

Nigeria - Mali 74-70
Nigeria outsmarted Mali 74-70 improving to 4-0 record in Group E. That is exactly the same record as Angola, who is next Nigeria's rival in Libya. The winner of this pool will be decided tomorrow. Mali dropped to 2-2, but it has a nice chance to reach the Quarterfinals. Chamberlain Oguchi (198-G-86, college: Illinois St.) top-scored in victory with 13 points. Ebi Ere (195-G/F-81, college: Oklahoma) had 12 and Josh Akognon (180-G-86, college: Washington St.) posted 10. Mali got 18 pts and 8 rebounds from Amara Sy (202-F-81). Waly Coulibaly (193-G/F-88) scored 17.

Group F
Cameroon - Tunisia 66-68
Tunisia escaped with tiny 68-66 win against Cameroon securing the top in Qualifying Group F. It means that in the Quarterfinals Tunisians will meet the fourth ranked team of Group E. They even can fail tomorrow in Day 6. Cameroon has 2-2 and good chance to advance. Amine Rzig (199-G/F-80) once again led the winners with 17 points and 6 rebounds. Naim Dhifallah (196-F/G-82) had 13 and Hamdi Braa (208-F/C-86) netted 11 pts, plus grabbed 6 rebounds. Gaston Essengue (203-F-83, college: UNLV) delivered 14 pts in loss.

Senegal - Morocco 73-75
Morocco handed tiny 75-73 record to Senegal so both teams now have 2-2 record in Qualifying Group F. Morocco also has 2-2 there, while Rwanda and CAF are on 1-3 so it will be exciting Day 6 for sure. All teams have a chance for the Quarterfinals. Mohamad Hachad (194-G-83, college: Northwestern) led Morocco with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Zakaria El Masbahi (191-G-79) had 17 and Yunss Akinocho (198-F-87, college: Coll.Sequoias CC) posted 12 pts. Mouhammad Faye (206-F-85) shined in Senegal with 18 points and 5 boards. Boniface Ndong (213-C-77) this time stopped on 13 pts and 12 rebs.

Central Africa - Rwanda 85-64
Central Africa handed 85-64 defeat to Rwanda tying with it on 1-3 record in Preliminary Group F. Still, both teams have a chance to reach the Quarterfinals. Senegal, Cameroon and Morocco have 2-2 each in this pool. Romain Lebel Guessagba (194-G-81, college: Xavier) was totally the bets player in this game collecting 30 points and 10 rebounds. Maixant Mombollet (203-F-81, college: Citadel) and Max Kougere (198-F-87) posted 11 pts each. In Rwanda Carlos Mugabo (-86) delivered 14 pts and grabbed 6 boards. Matt Miller (182-G-82, college: Bellarmine) and Kenny Gasana (-84) netted 11 pts each.

Places 13-14
Mozambique - Cape Verde 61-94
Cape Verde destroyed Mozambique finishing the AfroBasket on 13th place. Naturaly, Mozambique is 14th ranked team. Cape Verde should reach the Qualifying Round in Morocco, but they did not have luck in the last day of Preliminary Round. Jeff Xavier (185-G-85, agency: Bradley Sports Management, college: Manhattan) led them today with 27 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Mario Correia (189-G-78, college: Bryant) scored 14, while Mario Neves (190-G/F-77) registered double-double, 12 pts and 11 rebounds. Custodio Muchate (200-C-82) had 16 pts and 9 rebounds in loss. Octavio Magolico (200-C-84) stopped on 12.

Places 15-16
South Africa - Congo-Brazaville 81-65
15th place on AfroBasket 2009 in Libya belongs to South Africa. That is the first win for them, what was enough to avoid the last place. On the other side, Congo-Brazzaville ended as the only winless team in Libya. Kegorapetse Letsebe (198-G/F-80, college: Goucher) led the winners with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Quintin Denyssen (203-F-80) had 14 and Fuzi Mazibuko (-80) added 13 pts. Bertrand Boukinda (-81) delivered 19 pts in defeat. Christ Silas (192-F/C-88) followed with 14 pts, plus 8 rebounds.
