It was a day of mixed fortunes for KIU as their women’s team upstaged Nabisunsa 97-77 while their male counterparts fell short in an 80-72 loss to Nkumba Marines in the MTN-Fuba Basketball League at YMCA Court, Wandegeya on Sunday.

KIU coach Nimrod Kaboha started the afternoon, characterized by mild weather, in ecstasy as the women’s side erased a 40-all deadlock at the break to cruise home in final two quarters but sunset brought despair as the men fell short in trying to wipe a 33-39 deficit at recess against a resilient Marines.

Julius Lutwama and Philip Wakimwero led Marines to a second straight victory with 20 and 17 points respectively. Michael Kariuki added 20 points to KIU’s fruitless shot at victory.

In the women’s game, Susan Amito scored 15 of her 10 points in the final two quarters which KIU led 31-15 and 26-22 correspondingly as Nabisunsa ran out of legs despite Joyce Zalwango’s 17 points.

Thereafter, 2007 champions KCC Leopards mangled Crane High 120-27 in a one-sided game to further prove their title credentials.
