On a wrenched shooting night, KIU Titans got their MTN-Fuba league season rolling with a deserved 63-60 victory over Falcons on Friday.
The record champions never recovered from an insipid start that found them 10 points behind (10-21) by the end of the first quarter.
Ex-Warriors forward Joshua Etalu left so much wreckage in his way scoring a game-high 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Even with this, it was defence that lifted KIU as they restricted Falcons to fruitless outside shooting, managing only four of 26 from downtown.
Good support
Etalu got support from guards Abraham Juma (12) and Collins Onyango (13) whereas Falcons’ night was embedded in star forward Richard Osano Omondi.
Clearly struggling with a wrist injury sustained last week, he made 19 attempts from the field and three from the free throw line for his laboured 14 points and picked seven boards. Coming off a loss against UCU Canons, KIU coach Nimrod Kaboha dished no favours in holding on when Falcons took two of the final three periods 13-11, 21-14 and 16-17 respectively.
Earlier, Magic Stormers beat Makerere Sparks 65-61 in a thrilling women’s game. Rukia Meme led the onslaught with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
In today’s highlight, Ndejje University Angels face a UCU side desperate to brush off the 87-67 mauling by Kyambogo Warriors.
