It’s hard for anyone to keep his word but Stephen Omony could be a rare breed. Following Miracle Eagles’ draining training session which included a practice game against DMark Power on Monday night, Omony refused to promise anything in regard to his side’s play-off chances.

As his side prepared for a do-or-die MTN-Fuba League clash with UCU Canons only 24 hours later, his pre-match languid response to Daily Monitor was; “come and see (because) it will be a good game.”

When it came, Omony sunk a game-high 35 points as Miracle edged UCU 79-74 in a re-scheduled clash at YMCA court, Wandegeya. The Rubaga-based side took charge early, taking the first two quarters 17-13 and 21-18 before UCU got a sniff by taking the final periods 20-20 and 23-21 respectively.

Omony was playing a different ball game, shooting the lights out to turn the heat on champions Kyambogo Warriors in the race for the fourth and final play-off slot and also handed the university side their second defeat this term.

Omony who walked out on Falcons two months ago before joining Miracle (two-time MVP) reminded the small crowd why he is arguably the best player Ugandan basketball has ever produced.

Nothing could go wrong for the star as Miracle rode on his back with three-pointers, fade-away jumpers, rebounds, blocks and free throws looking like an oat meal for the No.12. In stark contrast, Mohammed Ali (14) and Brian Ssentogo (13) were the only ones that kept him company.

Despite trailing for most of the game, UCU kept within arm’s length with Ivan Enabu (19), Geoff Omondi (18) and Robert Mugabe (14) working hard but none of them held a gun as lethal as Omony’s.
The University side will now face Falcons tomorrow.
