Southern Zone Basketball League (Sozobal) champions Magang’a lifted the University of Malawi (Unima) Reunion tournament after defeating Falcons 72-64 at Chancellor College on Saturday.
In-form off guard Hope Chisamanga notched 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds to spearhead Magang’a to win the trophy.
Falcons could have won the game but they made a lot of turn-overs to hand Magang’a an opportunity to cement their lea
Apart from Chisamanga other notable contributors were forwards Emmanuel Kambalame and Titus Phoya. The duo’s defensive performance was brilliant after grabbing many rebounds to safeguard their teams lead.
Despite losing, Falcons were outstanding particularly through offguard Fletcher Mtawali and forwards Never Chauluka and Rombani Nyirenda.
Chisamanga said they were delighted to have won the trophy.
“We deserve the trophy because we worked tirelessly to emerge champions. We did not expect stiff competition from Falcons,” he said.
Mtawali said they were not worried with the downfall.
“This is part of our rebuilding exercise,” he said.
In football, Unima Alumni defeated current students 4-2
The reunion tournament also included various sporting activities including chess, darts and pool.
One of the event’s organising committee member Cynthia Chawani said they were excited with the turn-up.
“The event provided a forum whereby former students interacted with the current students. We feel their (alumni) presence will make a difference,” said the fourth year law student.
