KENYA : Ex champions Kenya Ports torch Co-op and ICC to sound warning


NAIROBI (Premier League) - Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) enjoyed a hugely successful weekend in Nairobi when they stopped top guns Co-operative Bank of Kenya and International Christian Center (ICC) at the KCB Sports Club, Ruaraka.

The porters stunned Co-operative Bank of Kenya 77-66 only hours after whitewashing ICC 101-82 to show that they are a force to reckoned with once again.

The former national champions, now under the tutelage of ex shooting star Sammy Kiki, are now looking a threat to the title held by KCB Lions with Co-op and Posta also eyeing the trophy.

KPA trailed 14-15 in the first quarter but rallied superbly to tie the duel 32-32 at the break. After resumption, KPA cruised to a huge 28-11 third quarter edge and despite Co-op's 23-17 fourth quarter effort, the game was already sealed.

KPA, who hammered International Christian Center (ICC) 101-82 the previous day, moved into fourth place tied with Posta on 36 points. The porters have only one game left against the mailmen who also play Co-op.

Tony Okello shot 20 points while Dan Okwirri continue to provide the experience as he showed the way with 14 points for the winners. Peter Kiganya made 15 for the regional champions.

National champions KCB Lions beat University of Nairobi "Terrorists" 60-42 to hang onto the top spot with 39 points from 21 matches.

KCB were ahead 25-22 in a low scoring first half, but did well after the break to bag maximum points to hang on to to the top placing.

Dangerman Tobias Onyango nailed 14 points for Lions, who are now well placed to finish in the top two with only one away game remaining. Brian Obimbo had 14 for the campus lads.

Posta crushed Blazers 71-42 and will not finish lower that third in the regular season in with two matches left to play. The mailmen's towering Alok Bol collected 14 points.

KPA humiliated ICC 101-82 in a high scoring game getting 30 points from Dan Okwirri and 26 from Innocent Oduor. Victor Bosire managed 12 for ICC.

Masinde Muliro University of Agriculture and Technology (MMUST) had a sad trip falling 73-75 to United States International University (USIU) and 65-67 to Strathmore University

USIU's Evans Letting led all scorers with 28 and Arou Ramadhan shot another 24 in that win. For the Blades, it was David Ogolla who led the way with 20 points as Martin Gitonga shot 15 for MMUST.

Reigning women champions Eagle Wings clobbered Yana 67-42 thanks to 15 points from Bridgit Nanzala and 10 a piece from Silalei Sani and Okoth sisters Janet and Angela.

Wings are tied at the top with KPA on 37 points. Irene Makori scored 15 for Yana lying third on 29. Kenya Polytechnic University beat Kenya College of Accountancy (KCA) University 49-42.

Predators nipped Mennonites 60-58 but this sweet result could have come too late to save their play off chances. Pamela Okonga nailed 14 points and Peninah Wafula added 10. Sarah Anyango recorded 18 for the losing side.

Sprite Storms had a miserable second half as they were thumped 55-39 by former national champions and league leaders KPA. The victors had a close 39-33 advantage in the firs two quarters before easily sailing away.
